Why Is a Definition of Done Important?

Without a Definition of Done (DoD), each team member may hold a different view of what “done” means—some might think meeting acceptance criteria is enough, while others expect additional quality checks. This mismatch can result in work that looks finished but cannot be released, creating hidden defects and eroding trust. A shared DoD eliminates these conflicting interpretations by aligning everyone on the same quality standards and ensuring increments are truly usable.

Metaphor

A Definition of Done is like the home inspection before closing on a house. Without it, “move-in ready” could mean anything from freshly painted walls to hidden mold behind them.

The DoD sets consistent standards so the product is genuinely ready for use, not hiding defects.
