How Does the DoD Differ from the Definition of Ready?
The Definition of Ready is a complementary (non-Scrum) practice that applies to PBIs, making transparent the prerequisites needed before bringing a PBI into a Sprint. The DoD, in contrast, defines the quality bar for the Increment.
Metaphor
The Definition of Ready is like making sure all the ingredients are prepped before you start cooking a recipe. It ensures a Product Backlog Item has what’s needed to begin work. The Definition of Done, on the other hand, is the final taste test that confirms the dish meets the standard of quality before serving it.
The DoD isn’t just mixed up with the DoR—it’s also commonly confused with acceptance criteria.
